A magnet is a material or object that produces a magnetic field. This magnetic field is invisible but is responsible for the most notable property of a magnet: a force that pulls on other ferromagnetic materials, such as iron, and attracts or repels other magnets.
Korean scientists decided to use magnets in order to stimulate cancer cells to self-destruct. Namely, the body gets rid of old, defective, and infected cells via programmed cell death (PCD), or apoptosis.
In this process, the body sends signals by fragmenting and the rejected cell responds to them while fragments are consumed by immune cells. Hence, magnets stimulate apoptosis. On the other hand, when this process fails, there is an uncontrolled division of rejected cells which leads to tumor development.
At the Yonsei University in Seoul, the professor Jinwoo Cheon and a team of scientists made an experiment by using magnetic fields on bowel cancer cells in order to induce apoptosis.
The scientists attached iron nanoparticles to antibodies, which bind to “receptor” molecules on tumor cells. A soon s the magnetic field is applied, those molecules cluster and cause apoptosis, by stimulating the signal of “self-destruction”.
In the end of the study, more than half of the bowel cancer cells were killed as soon as the apoptotic clustering began, and at the same time, healthy cells remained unharmed.
However, a scientific team conducted a related experiment on zebrafish, and it leads to the growth of unusual tails. Therefore, more research is needed in order to confirm the effect of this procedure.
The scientists said: “We have demonstrated that apoptosis signaling can be turned on in-vitro (in the laboratory) and in a zebrafish in-vivo (living) model by using a magnetic switch. Our magnetic switch may be broadly applicable to any type of surface membrane receptors that exhibit cellular functions on clustering.”
The journal Nature Materials is going to publish this study. However, the findings of studies of this kind are often hidden from the public due to the fact that they are not profitable for big pharmaceutical companies.
Namely, drug manufacturers profit on diseases and cancer drugs, even though they have been shown to worsen the situation of patients.
Similarly, even though numerous studies have shown the beneficial effects of natural cancer-fighting foods such as ginger, berries, turmeric, garlic, papaya leaf extract, and many others, the pharmaceutical industry and conventional medicine will not recognize or confirm their beneficial effects in the treatment of this deadly disease.
